Fourteen Years Young

I apologize for the significant absence, and I can’t promise I’ll be back to blogging regularly just yet, as it’s been a busy couple of months. But I’ll do my best to get back at it soon. In the meantime, there’s always a little time to celebrate my best beastie, who turned fourteen yesterday! He got a thorough grooming, a haircut, and two Krispy Kreme glazed donuts–his favorite– to celebrate yesterday, plus some general snuggles and grazing time.

And to celebrate today on the blog, here are 14 of my favorite photos of Val from the last year:

This horse makes my life better in so many ways, and I can’t imagine it without him these days. He’s still the best decision I’ve ever made, and whatever happens, I’m never letting this one go for too long. I love his goofy personality (like that time he pooped in a friend’s brush box) and how he’s 110% all heart and try. He’s a little intense at times (like when we motorcycle around the turns and fling dirt in our own faces), but his intensity so perfectly matches my own that it works.

Those little gray hairs over his eyes that are starting to touch his stripe terrify me a little, but I know this horse has a long time until he’s really and truly old. I’m so privileged to have known him his whole post-track career, and to get to be the whole who loves him for the rest of his new one. It’s been five wonderful years of knowing this horse, and I’m thoroughly looking forward to many many more, though I’d love it if from time to time those moments could just pause and linger.

Happy fourteenth my sweet, wonderful heart horse, Valido.
