Hot Mess

So Monday. Wow. It was bad. Sunday was fabulous, we had so much fun, and then on Monday poor Val just could not. To his credit, he got moved to a new pasture with a new room mate on Sunday after the lesson, and I think he was a bit undone from that. He was weirdly happy to see me (like way more than normal) and he gazed longingly at his little 3 yr old buddies in his old pasture while I got on. But still. Super hot mess.

He wasn’t necessarily misbehaving, but he just could not take a deep breath and relax through his back, or at all really. I mostly did damage control and did my best to let him stretch down a little, but after about 30 minutes I called it. I’m mostly going to let the photos from Monday do the talking. Also, sorry some of these are so dark. I did a super quick editing job this morning all while getting ready for work and making apple fritters.

Warming up with trot poles. A little tight and short, but so far so good.

Stepping out nicely in front, but not tracking up very much yet.

But then there was some of this.

That walk break may have been a mistake. Also, hands: Wut R U Doing??

“I CANNOT RELAX MOTHER. I NEED TO MAKE SURE MY NEW ROOM MATE DOES NOT EAT MY SNACKS.”

And after warming up, we’re even shorter. And I promise, that on the bit moment lasted 2.5 seconds max.

“I can’t turn left. No. Can’t. Stop. Arggg.”

“Stahhhhp. I just want to be a llama today!”

Finally a little stretching!

Pretty accurate summary of the ride in one picture.

Tricking me into making both of us into pretzels. But finally reaching for contact?

So much awkward in one photo.

OK a little bett-wait what is happening with those legs?

Our best canter all day! But far from our best on a normal day.

Downward transitions. We do them. Ish.

This was the worst ride we’ve had in a while, but it was good for perspective, since a lot of our rides used to be like this. Poor tense little beastie was back to his normal, awesome self yesterday, and today we’re shipping off to the show! Horses man. Keeping you on your toes.

Sometimes I have to remind myself that no matter what yesterday was like every day is a new day. Horses are hard. But they are also pretty and we wuv them forever and ever!
